There is plenty to experience just outside of the Lochmere community as well. Within close proximity are many premium grocery stores and other shopping centers.  There are many public and private schools and day cares as well as many churches within a 5-mile radius.   A wide variety of restaurants are in the area and just down Kildaire Farm Road is Western Wake Med Hospital. Koka Booth Amphitheatre is close by and hosts outdoor concerts, festivals and family movie nights from spring through fall.

Just across Kildaire Farm Road from the Highlands section is Hemlock Bluffs Nature Preserve, one of only a few state nature preserves in North Carolina. It has many features such as hiking trails, boardwalks, and an educational center. On the other side of Lochmere is Swift Creek Bluffs Nature Preserve, famous for its massive beech trees.
